OUR INGREDIENTS
There is a fundamental connection that links the oceans to human life. Just as a marine organism needs to defend itself against sunlight, pollution or bacteria, your skin faces the same aggressors. Called bio-mimicry, this affinity is further strengthened because our skin is 70% water.
Even in severe ocean environments, certain marine plants are especially adept at protecting themselves against UV radiation and pollution, making them ideal ingredients for skincare.
Between the firming and ‘glowifying’ power of marine collagen, the wide array of minerals that benefit skin, and the nutrients in ocean plants like seaweed, kelp, algae, and phytoplankton, the sea is one of the greatest sources of skin-friendly ingredients, and many of them work inside and out.
SCIENCE + SEA
Our quest for exceptional skincare ingredients has taken us to the depths of the oceans. Already recognised as a key territory for skincare innovation, this underwater diversity holds unrivalled potential for cosmetics.
It’s estimated that there are around 10 to 15 million species of microalgae (compared to around 280,000 species of land- based plants), which gives us a glimpse of the scale of the potential marine actives yet to be discovered, ingredients that can advance both performance and skin feel.
Many types of seaweed have high levels of antioxidants and essential minerals, while different types of algae contain peptides that support cell renewal and increased elastine. Then there are fish oils and plankton extracts, both known to be high in essential fatty acids and omegas, which hydrate and help skin retain moisture (a huge win for those with dry skin or who are worried about wrinkles and lack of firmness).
BIOTECHNOLOGY + INNOVATION
Our marine bio-actives are sourced via biotechnology – the technology of living things. Sol+Sea harnesses cutting- edge ‘blue biotechnology’ to infuse marine extracts into skincare products. For example, our After Element Facial Moisturiser is packed with algae, peptides, and seaweed extract to hydrate, promote elasticity, and soothe and brighten skin.
Sol+Sea’s skincare partners specialise in sustainable, controlled processes to reproduce purer and more active versions of ingredients in laboratories – leaving the original habitat undisturbed.
